"Brambles" Burst Into Life

The newly created ‘Brambles’ group within Blacon’s BYPP are working with the Sustainable Blacon team to help care for and provide green maintenance support to the recently renovated Old Station site, along the Greenway cycle and footpath in Blacon.

BramblesThe ‘Brambles’ group, recently equipped with all of the necessary tools to provide their support, will spend a day at the Old Station site on a regular basis helping to keep the trees and shrubs looking tidy, planting more wildflower seeds and plugs and adding additional bulbs to the already impressive display of spring daffodils. They will also help to keep the beautiful mosaic clean and the paths looking tidy.

'It's a great opportunity to be working with Sustainable Blacon and we would like to thank everyone for the warm reception we have had on our first job, to maintain the Old Station Site' said Ceris Timms, the adult supervisor of the Brambles group. 'On our first day we planted foxglove & cowslip plugs, cleaned the mosaic and carried out woodland management tasks.'

Vicky Wilsher seen in the photograph with Ceris and her Brambles colleague James Parton added, 'Through volunteering in our local community we can gain the satisfaction of helping to keep Blacon clean and green. It helps us gain new skills and practical work experience in this kind of career.'

All of the Brambles team are proud to be working alongside local community groups to help bring Blacon into bloom and are looking forward to next month, when they will be planting more wild flower plugs and over 1000 snowdrops which have been kindly donated.

Blacon Children Make a Difference!

The children of Blacon have been working hard to improve their local community. The children’s parliament set up by Blacon High school has been working with Sustainable Blacon to develop their Eco house and community Garden.

The Childrens Parliament was set up by Laura Hilton, transition mentor at the request of the Head teachers in Blacon. The 5 primary schools are; Dee Point Primary School,  Highfield Primary School, The Arches Primary School, J H Godwin Primary School and St. Theresa’s Primary School.

The idea behind it was to have a group of young people get together to discuss Blacon and try to address any issues or help with any local projects, hence getting involved with Sustainable Blacon.

The children of BlaconOver the next couple of weeks the children will be collecting plants and materials for their gardens and displays. Their work will be shown at Sustainable Blacons Second Eco house, Number 2 Stamford Road due to open later this year. For more information on how you can get involved with Sustainable Blacon visit their website www.sustainableblacon.org.uk.

How Much Heat Are You Losing From Your House

Using a specially designed ‘infrared’ camera, it is possible for householders to get an instant picture of where and how they are losing heat from their home.

In the two pictures below, blue indicates the externally cold areas, where very little heat is being lost from inside the home. However the red areas indicate significant heat loss and thus waste of the householder’s energy and money!

Knowing exactly how and where to insulate your home can help make considerable savings in energy bills. A ‘Thermal Imaging Survey’ of your home uses the infrared camera to show you exactly where to improve your home insulation. The images reveal where insulation is missing, settled, wet or damaged and can also identify where cold air is coming through your walls.

Sustainable Blacon is committed to helping householders lower their energy bills and reduce carbon emissions by identifying the key points to insulate homes and prevent heat loss. Our Home Energy Assessment team, based at Dee Point Centre, Blacon is now available to perform home energy audits and thermal imaging surveys; free to residents of Blacon and for a small fee to others.

For further information, or to arrange a Home Energy Assessment with Thermal Imaging, please contact Shaun at Sustainable Blacon on 01244 379021 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
